Products for Oily Skin & Makeup for Oily Skin

If you are in search of the best products for oily skin, you’ve come to the right blog!  This specific article will detail a list of the best face cleansers, makeup, toner and powder for oily skin – AND will explain how to use them!

Those with oily skin already know it’s a constant battle to keep the shine away.  This article will give you a brief overview of products to use in order to fight oiliness and keep oily skin healthy.  Read on for a customized list of products oily skin.

Now that you have your list of products for oily skin, here are some guidelines and instructions for taking care of and cleansing your skin – so you can look radiant and avoid acne breakouts.

How to Cleanse Oily Skin: First, those with oily skin need to make sure they are exfoliating daily.  One of the most common myths is that you do not need to scrub oily skin – and this myth couldn’t be more wrong.  Those with oily skin produce excess sebum, which in turn clogs the pores and leads to breakouts. Pores must be massaged with a scrub to encourage cell turnover and increase circulation. This will keep pores bacteria free, which means fewer blackheads and breakouts, and less oil production. If you’re looking for a cheap but quality brand that you can use every day, try St Ives Apricot Scrub, which costs around 4.00 at a drug store. This scrub is gentle enough to use both morning and night & is great for removing heavy foundation makeup. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, and want a scrub to deeply exfoliate only a couple times a week, go for either Skin Obsession Microdermabrasion Crystals, costing around 14.00 at www.skinobsession.com or Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Scrub, which costs around 40.00 at Sephora or www.drbrandtskincare.com .  These will leave skin glowing and flush excess debris from pores.  Since these are “heavy duty” scrubs, I advise using them 1x per week on sensitive skin, and 2x per week on average or acne prone skin.

After exfoliating, rinse away the cleansing granules and medicate your open pores with a Salicylic Acid Face Wash. One of the best face washes for oily skin is called Acne Free 24/7 Foaming Face Wash.  You can purchase it at a drug store for about 7.00. Using your bare hands and medium-hot water, rinse away the cleansing granules.  Next, using a body glove to apply the Acne Free Foaming Wash in circular motions all over your face.  Continue for approximately one minute, then rinse all traces of the soap away and dry your face with a fluffy towel. You can find body gloves in the same department as loofahs and eye pillows at your local drugstore or Walmart. They only cost about 3.00 and work wonders for removing facial gunk and stimulating circulation.  The combination of the rough surface of the body glove and the Salicylic Acid in the face wash will remove any remaining debris, dead skin, and blackheads. The Salicylic Acid in this particular formula also keeps working for 24 hours, to deter bacteria from forming in your pores.

Moisturizers for Oily Skin: Contrary to popular belief, oily skin needs moisture to balance itself and slow oil production.  Skin that is stripped of its natural oil from harsh cleansers will often produce even MORE oil to compensate. Don’t let that happen to you! For people with severely oily skin, Proactive Skin Care provides an excellent line of products that are suited toward oily and/or acne prone skin. Their Benzoyl Peroxide based Repairing Lotion is excellent for keeping breakouts at bay while providing just enough light-weight moisture.  They also make a product called Daily Oil Control which balances skin, helps prevent clogged pores, and prevents makeup from streaking.  If you don’t mind spending a bit more, the VERY BEST moisturizer I’ve ever found for oily skin is Dr. Brandt “Pores No More” Pore Effect Refining Cream.  It contains tea tree oil and salicylic acid which keeps pores squeaky clean while providing the perfect amount of moisture for oily skin. It costs around $50 at Sephora, but you can often find cheap sample packs on Ebay if you don’t want to spend that much.

Another excellent moisturizer for oily skin is Aloe Gel Moisturizer. This type is very light weight and will not leave any greasy residue on your already oily skin. One of the best brands is Makeup Artist’s Choice Aloe Jelly with Lavender. The formula is calming to oily and acne prone skin, and will not clog pores. It dries within a couple of minutes, and secretly hydrates your skin - without adding to your oily skin problem.  This retails for about $8 at www.makeupartistschoice.com

Oil Absorbing Face Powder for Oily Skin: There is one product that people with oily skin should NEVER be without: Mattify Ultra Powder for Oily Skin.  This translucent loose powder is designed especially for oily skin, to soak up oil all day long. Its ingredients absorb oil to prevent your face from becoming shiny and sticky.  It can be applied both before and after foundation, or alone.  When used as a primer before foundation, it helps the makeup glide over pores for an air-brushed look, and adheres makeup to your face for longer wear – while also protecting the skin from makeup.

Excessively oily skin will need one or two touch-ups during the day, but  Mattify Powder can be applied several times without any cakey heavy feeling.  It disappears into the skin and silently absorbs oil without disturbing the rest of your makeup.  Another benefit? It cleanses the skin as you wear it! The Kaolin Clay in this item actually absorbs dirt and oil from your pores all day long.  This means that at the end of the day when you wash your face, all of the gunk that would normally fill your pores is whisked away with your exfoliator or face wash. Since this powder is completely transparent, it can even be worn by men with oily skin as an invisible barrier to keep oil at bay. Purchase this at www.mattifycosmetics.com
for $8 -$13.

Foundation for Oily Skin: Always select an oil-free foundation that states it is specifically suited to oily skin.  This is one area where you should not hesitate to splurge on a high quality brand.  It is very difficult to find a drug-store brand that is up to the task of absorbing facial oil. As a result, most are sticky or thick formulas that will “melt” off you skin within a matter of hours.

If you must choose a drugstore brand, go with L’Oreal Infallible Liquid Foundation.  It stays on for around 6 hours and provides a reasonable amount of even coverage. One of the very best high-end brands of makeup for oily skin is Estee Lauder Maximum Cover Camouflage Makeup.  A pea-sized drop is enough for your entire face, and it stays flawless for an amazing 10-12 hours.   This foundation is so light-weight, it feels like you aren’t even wearing makeup! The high pigmentation in the formula allows for superior coverage of flaws – most of the time you will not need to wear concealer on freckles, acne spots, or dark circles.  Simply apply with finger tips or a makeup sponge, for a flawlessly matte complexion.  Dusting on some of the Mattify Loose Powder before and after the foundation will give it even longer wear, and provide even more oil control. Purchase this at a department store or at www.esteelauder.com for $28.00.

Long Lasting Eye Makeup for Oily Skin: If you have oily skin, you probably find that your eye shadow & mascara either disappears or becomes very sticky during the day.  Not a good look!  Here are some eye makeup suggestions for oily skin:Mattify Cosmetics also makes a mineral powder eye shadow designed especially for those with oily skin. Produced with the same base as their Oil Absorbing Loose Powder, these eye shadows stay put all day long and don’t crease, fade, or change color.  They offer several stunning colors with high pigment and gorgeous sparkle. These are some of the best quality shadows I’ve ever found, and are comparable to MAC eye shadow, but cost a quarter of the price. Mattify Long Lasting Eye Shadows run about 5.00 at www.mattifycosmetics.com and are worth trying in every shade.  They also transform into liquid eye liners when applied with a wet applicator! Their “Twilight” (black) and “Ocean Mist” (sparkly blue-green) work beautifully as liner.  They look truly amazing and stay on all day long. If you prefer a ready-made liquid liner, try Styli Style 24 hour long lasting eye liner. These are very high pigment, and last even through swimming! You can purchase these at most CVS stores or the Styli Style website for around $8.00.

If you’re going to use mascara, ALWAYS opt for waterproof, and curl your lashes first! Oily skin causes the mascara to dissolve and lashes to droop, leading to the dreaded “raccoon eyes”.  Some of the best waterproof mascaras are Cover Girl Lash Blast Waterproof and Maybelline Volum Express Waterproof, which cost around $7.00 at drug stores. It’s not really necessary to spend big bucks on mascara. These two have out-performed several MAC & Dior mascaras that I have tried. They last longer and hold curl better than the expensive department store brands.

Makeup Setting Spray: As a last step, you should set your makeup for all day water-resistant wear.  Model in a Bottle Makeup Setting Spray helps ALL of your makeup stay in place through the day. After your makeup is in place, simply hold the spray bottle about 8 inches away and spritz the center of your face a couple of times.  This forms an invisible barrier to prevent makeup from sliding off of oily skin.  Touchups with the Mattify Loose Powder for Oily Skin can be done over the top of the setting spray throughout the day, without disturbing your makeup. This is a must have if you will be at an event where you might cry, live in a humid climate, or go swimming/exercise frequently but still want to wear makeup.  Purchase this at www.modelinabottle.com for about $18.00.

If you have any to add to the list, please leave comments!!  I discovered most of these products through trial and error, after purchasing hundreds of products that claimed to be good for oily skin, which was very costly!
